What not to get moms for Mother’s Day

I don’t want to sound ungrateful. The reality is I don’t require any present at all! I’m sure most moms agree. But if you insist on getting a material present then I do have to insist you be thoughtful to the mom in your life and not just get any old knick-knack for the sake of bringing a present. Moms have enough messy piles to deal with. Our valuables have to be kept on high shelves where prying little hands can’t get to them and there’s only so much room up there. Flowers and taking us out to eat are always welcome! There are a few presents I’d avoid unless you know she absolutely loves them!

Stuffed Animals

I’ve always felt guilty about hating these, but they aren’t the easiest to keep clean. If they’re too large, how do you get them in the washer? Putting them in the dryer will ruin their fur. Besides, everyone buys stuffed animals, so believe me when I say we have enough of them to keep clean.

Quote Books

I realize it’s the thought that counts but we are rarely harboring excitement for that quote book missing in our lives. Send us a meme, write the quote on a dessert that I can consume or just make me a drink while you shout out motivational phrases at me!

Empty Picture Frames

If there is one thing I can guarantee you, it is that there is no shortage of picture frames in a mom’s life. If you’re going to get a picture frame, take the time to put a beautiful family picture in it or a print you know she will enjoy.

Large Works of art that she has never mentioned

Unless you know she is a fan of the artist, don’t go out of your way to get her a piece of art that might not even go with her decorative scheme. Even if you think it’s absolutely gorgeous and it will be worth millions one day, trust me, you do not want to be that person.

Gaudy Accessories that are just not her style

Please make an effort to find out what her style is. Look at her Pinterest, look at what she wears but just don’t shop blindly. If you’re not sure, get her a candle with a relaxing scent and a face mask for her me time.

Now that you know the brutal truth, shop with your conscience. 😉

  1. Wow, this is a wonderful list. And I would totally hate it if I’m.given quotes books or empty photo frames or even stuffed toys.
I am sure a lot of people will be grateful to you for putting across this list for them.

  2. It’s such a fine line, right? Get her nothing and risk having her hurt or upset, or get something that will go unused! I’m with you though…if it’s given as a gift I feel guilty getting rid of it so it sits in my room collecting dust and not getting used, but not being sold or donated because of guilt! I agree dinner and flowers are preferred! Or alcohol!

  3. Oh I am FEELING this post right now. I hate receiving gifts like the ones on this list for the exact reasons that you mentioned…but it always seems to happen. *Sigh* I know they mean well and I appreciate the love, and I also hate that they spent money on something that I’ll ultimately just get rid of.
